Two arrested in murder of Miami-area high school senior during Adidas shoe deal, cops say

Detectives have arrested two men they say are responsible for the robbery and murder of South Miami-Dade high school senior Andrea Camps Lacayo during a botched deal to buy Adidas sneakers.
Adrian Cosby and George Walton, both 19, were booked into a Miami-Dade jail early Sunday on charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder and attempted armed robbery.
Detectives say Camps and her boyfriend, Sergio Berben, had arranged, via social media, to meet up with Cosby and Walton on Tuesday.

The deal: Berben was to sell them three pairs of Adidas Yeezy sneakers for $935. But as Walton asked to try on the shoes, Cosby crept up and fired at Camps and Berben as they sat in a car near an abandoned house at Southwest 270th Street and 127th Court, police said.
The 18-year-old Camps, who was set to graduate from Terra Environmental Research Institute in a few weeks, died in surgery at Jackson South Medical Center on Tuesday. Terra, like all Florida schools, is closed due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and students are attending class online.

At least one bullet hit Camps in the torso, and the boy was grazed in the arm, Miami-Dade police said.
Nicknamed “Dimples,” Camps was the captain of the Terra Emeralds, the school’s competitive dance team.
Detectives worked around the clock, piecing together the teens’ communications via Instagram and other social-media services. Police on Saturday raided the South Miami-Dade home where Cosby and Walton lived together.
Police say Cosby and Walton confessed. Walton claimed “his only intention for meeting with Sergio Berben was to steal the sneakers once he tried them on,” according to an arrest report.
The surviving victim also identified Cosby as the shooter, Miami-Dade Detective Christopher Villano wrote in an arrest report.
Walton had no previous arrests, according to state records. Cosby was arrested as a juvenile in November 2017 on charges of grand-theft auto, robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. The charges were dropped the following year, although what, if any, punishment he received was unclear on Sunday.
