WHO on Tuesday considered the progress of Covid-19 vaccine clinical trials as very encouraging, among about 40 candidates, 10 of which are in third phase.
In a video conference, some World Health Organization (WHO) experts, led by its Director General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, assessed the works and efforts being done by Turkey, the United States, Russia, China and the United Kingdom, in relation to an immunization against the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
WHO´s Senior Expert, Soumya Swaminathan, said they are awaiting for some information on efficiency and safety of the vaccines, and the first one could be ready to be submitted for regulatory approval in December or early 2021, the process still has a long way to go though.
For Dr. Mariangela Simao, WHO’s chief of access to medicines and health products, the work with national regulatory authorities is critical, and warned that many steps are needed for generalizing a vaccine once phase three trials are completed, in addition to needing a license in the country where the trial took place.
Simao also said there is sufficient production capacity that must be available for its use.
