Hospitals in Mexico City almost overflowing with Covid-19 cases

Hospitals in Mexico City are almost overflowing with Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, so capital and federal authorities have been forced to swiftly install 344 additional planned beds.

The city has an average 80-percent saturation, which means that there are hospitals almost occupied at 100 percent and entire colonies (neighborhoods) already without inpatient capacity, local health authorities informed.

The Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers, the Secretariat of the Navy and the Citibanamex temporary unit are working hard to prevent the situation to become a disaster.

According to the head of Government, Claudia Sheinbaum, the objective of the joint allocation of resources is to reach 7,000 beds this week, with which, according to the local epidemiological model, it will be enough to meet the demand; whereas, at the metropolitan level (surroundings) we plan to reach 9,500 beds.

On Tuesday, Mexico City reported 5,089 hospitalized patients (7,094 at the metropolitan level), 3,809 of whom were in general beds, and 1,280 were intubated. Only 686 beds were available, but isolated.

As of this Tuesday, the local Secretariat of Health will set up inpatient tents in the capital, as it did in August, to accommmodate 888 additional patients.

Mexican Secretary of Health Jorge Alcocer called for national unity to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic and reiterated that doctors and nurses are working a lot, are exhausted and need help.

According to the last national update, Mexico records 1,325,915 Covid-19 infections and 118,598 deaths.
