A county in Anhui, southern China, reported finding positive samples of SARS-CoV-2 in packages of domestically-produced chicken drumsticks, something that until now was only reported in foreign food.
The event took place in the town of Lai’an and involved health tests on personnel of the production plant, but at the moment none are infected with the pathogen.
Authorities also checked offices and other spaces in the facility, without detecting the virus either.
This is the first time that China has discovered traces of SARS-CoV-2 in frozen meat produced by its companies, since in recent months it was only reported in products and containers arriving from abroad, linking them with the latest outbreaks of Covid-19.
The situation led to alerts from epidemiologists about the need to monitor all items, even those that do not require cold storage, and fueled the debate about whether the virus really emerged in Wuhan, while some observers defend the thesis that it could have originated in another country.
